An old Cotswold stone tithe barn
Tithe Barn - The main tithe barn at the farm contains many special historical architectural features. It started its life in Guiting Power, although the reason for its move to Manor Farm in 1250 is not known. It would have originally been thatched and owned by the church, ready to receive each farmer's rent, one tenth of their yield.
A good sized Cotswold stone property, with 10 large rectangular windows.
Manor Farm - The current incarnation of Manor Farm dates back to around 1880. It was split into two dwellings around the same time. Two farmers lived either side, Mr Slatter and Mr Davies. The left hand side was subsequently divided into 3 flats.
A Cotswold stone wall runs behind a green lawn and tarmac drive. Trees grow behind it, with a further two in front. There is a wooden bench on the left hand side.
Bee Boles - At Manor House, several bee boles are visible in the walls of the drive. Bee boles are cavities or alcoves in walls that were designed for storing the bee baskets over winter. They protected the bees in their wicker skep from wind and rain. (The term "bole" originates from Scotland, meaning recess in a wall.) Beekeeping was very popular before sugar became readily accessible, providing an affordable sweetener. Beeswax was also in high demand for candles.
